The Equus Sanctuary
The Equus Sanctuary is the largest domestic horse preserve in the United States with over 200 residents at this time. The residents of the Sanctuary are free to play and socialize at will.
Operating on 40 acres of land, featuring 20 pastures just outside Los Angeles, the Sanctuary is a refuge for horses pulled from the slaughter pipeline and takes in horses that are blind, crippled, old, starving or wild. The animals are allowed to retire there and are never sold or exploited.
The directors and officers at the preserve are all volunteers dedicated to caring for these residents and informing the world about the cruelties, injustices and deceptions associated with horses.
The Equus Sanctuary website is very informative and sheds light on issues effecting horse lovers as well as horse owners - well worth the time spent reading. Covered topics range from the unsuspectingly gained supply of horsemeat and by-products for public consuption and medication, to the refreshing recovery stories of some of the Sanctuary's happiest residents.
The Equus Sanctuary's motto is "Together we can make a difference for animals who cannot defend themselves!" |
